Celebrating Diversity: Purple Fair 2025 Champions Inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities

In a vibrant celebration of diversity and inclusion, the daylong Purple Fair 2025 was held today at the Community Hall, Pakyong. Organised under the themes Divyangjan in Viksit Bharat 2047 and Pushpit Sikkim @50, the event focused on promoting inclusivity and empowerment of persons with disabilities (Divyangjan).
The programme was graced by Mrs Laden Lhamu Bhutia, Zilla Adhakshya, as the Chief Guest, while Mrs Prabha Pradhan, Zilla Upadhakshya, attended as the Guest of Honour.
The Purple Fair was organised by the Composite Regional Centre (CRC Sikkim) for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, functioning under the administrative control of the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
The event aimed to create awareness about various disabilities and their impact on individuals’ lives, while fostering understanding, acceptance and social inclusion of persons with disabilities.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner, Pakyong, appreciated the organisers for providing a meaningful platform for individuals with disabilities to showcase their talents and abilities. He emphasised the importance of nurturing an inclusive environment, stating that every individual, irrespective of ability, contributes a unique value to society and deserves opportunities to grow and shine.
Ms Pushpanjali Gupta, Director, CRC Sikkim, highlighted key aspects of empowering persons with disabilities through accessible healthcare, education and skill development initiatives. She also spoke about the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) scheme, which provides assistive devices to senior citizens and persons with disabilities to support them in their daily activities. She further informed the audience about various services offered by the centre, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological assessments.
Ms Poonam Pradhan, Joint Director, BAC Pakyong, stressed the need to empower persons with disabilities in all spheres of life and to build an inclusive society that ensures quality of life, respect and dignity for all.
During the event, participants showcased their talents through performances in dance, music, arts, cooking and sports. The programme also featured a special performance by Ms Passang Doma Lama, Brand Ambassador of Purple Fest 2025.
In addition, the fair included a healthcare facility, a handloom stall and a food joint. Officials from various departments, along with teachers and students, were also present on the occasion.
