    09-08-2024: CRC-Sikkim organises webinar on skill development for persons with disabilities

    GANGTOK, August 9 (PIB): The Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC- Sikkim) located in Assam Lingzey hosted a webinar on Skill Development of Persons with Disabilities today. This event was conducted under the auspices of National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPWD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Government of India (GOI). The Skill Council of Persons with Disabilities (SCPWD), New Delhi, partnered in organizing this event.
    Dr. Niharika Nigam, head of Standards & Quality Assurance & Programmes at SCPWD, New Delhi, was present as the key resource person. Dr. Nigam, with her extensive 29-year experience in rehabilitation and a notable academic background, delivered an insightful
    presentation on various job roles available for persons with benchmark disabilities, including positions in food and beverages and hospitality. CRC-Sikkim director Pushpanjali Gupta emphasized that empowering individuals without disabilities is crucial for creating career opportunities for persons with disabilities, advocating for inclusive growth.
    A noteworthy recommendation from a faculty member of the Department of Vocation and Tourism at Sancha Man College, Gyalshing, was the initiation of a sign language course in Sikkim to enhance communication and accessibility.
    On behalf of NILD director Dr. Lalit Narayan, Dr. Alendra Tripathy, lecturer at NILD, Kolkata, concluded the event by extending thanks to Dr. Nigam, the distinguished guests, participants and the organizing committee of CRC-Sikkim for their invaluable contributions to the success of the webinar.
    The webinar had State Tourism principal secretary C.S. Rao as the chief guest, and Education and Social Welfare secretary Tsewang Gyachho and Commerce & Industries director as the guest of honours.
    The event had participation from over 110 attendees, including faculty and students from various institutions like Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition Nar Bahadur Government College, Sancho Man Limboo Government Vocational College, Dentam, Sikkim Government B.Ed College, Soreng, Hearing Impaired School, Gangtok and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Institute for the Visually Impaired, Namchi.
    This webinar reflects the ongoing commitment of CRC-Sikkim, SCPWD, and affiliated organizations to advancing skill development and creating empowering opportunities for persons with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. (PIB)
